Many patients are apprehensive about getting a root canal treatment. However, there is no need to fear this procedure. At Ardent Dental in North Vancouver, we have successfully performed numerous root canal treatments. If you or someone you know is scheduled for a root canal, read on to learn more about what to expect.

When is a Root Canal Needed?

A root canal is necessary when tooth decay is left untreated and reaches the pulp of the tooth. The infection in the root and pulp must be removed to prevent further complications like abscesses, tooth loss, or even bone loss.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

Root canal treatments are often misunderstood as long and painful procedures. While they are more complex than cavity fillings, they are generally not more uncomfortable. In fact, patients often experience more discomfort from the infection prior to the treatment than during the procedure itself.

Here’s what to expect during a root canal at Ardent Dental:

  • Anesthesia: Your dentist will apply a local anesthetic to ensure you are completely numb before starting the procedure. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, additional anesthetic can be applied.
  • Removal of Infected Pulp: The dentist will remove the infected pulp from the tooth.
  • Cleaning and Disinfection: The area will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
  • Filling: The tooth will be filled with a tooth-colored resin.
  • Crown Recommendation: Since the tooth will be weakened, a crown is recommended to strengthen and restore it.

Aftercare

After the procedure, some discomfort and sensitivity are normal but manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. Most patients can return to work or school without needing time off. You will likely need follow-up appointments to prepare the tooth for a crown and to fit the crown onto the tooth.

Good oral hygiene is essential after a root canal to prevent future decay. At Ardent Dental in North Vancouver, we guide our patients on maintaining a healthy home care routine to avoid decay and infections.
