Endodontics at Ardent Dental, North Vancouver
Endodontics is a dental specialty focused on the pulp, tissues, and nerves inside the teeth. When the nerve or pulp within your tooth becomes infected, successful endodontic (root canal) treatment can save the tooth and treat the infection before it causes further health complications.
Why Endodontic Treatment is Important
An infected or abscessed tooth can cause significant discomfort, including swelling and toothache. More critically, bacteria from the infection can enter the bloodstream and spread to other parts of the body, leading to severe health issues.
Root Canal Treatment Explained
Root canal treatment involves removing infected or dead pulp (the inner nerves and blood vessels) from inside the tooth and then filling and sealing the resulting space. Despite being a more complex procedure, a properly performed root canal treatment is no more uncomfortable than having a cavity filled.
Steps of Root Canal Treatment:
- Anesthesia and Isolation: The dentist or endodontist begins by applying local anesthesia and isolating the area with a rubber dam.
- Accessing the Infected Pulp: An opening is drilled in the tooth to reach the infected pulp.
- Removing the Infection: Specialized tools are used to remove the infected pulp and clean the area.
- Filling the Root Space: The cleaned root space is filled with a special material to prevent re-infection.
- Sealing with a Crown: Finally, the surface of the tooth is sealed with a crown to restore its function and appearance and prevent further infection.
Why Save the Tooth?
While one option to treat the infection is tooth extraction, this creates a gap between the surrounding teeth, often necessitating a dental implant or bridge. It is generally preferable to save the natural tooth through root canal treatment whenever possible.
Procedure Duration
Root canal treatment is typically performed in one or two visits. An additional one or two visits may be required to complete the crown restoration.
