Oral Cancer Screening at Ardent Dental, North Vancouver
Understanding Oral Cancer
Oral cancer results from abnormal cell growth in the mouth, lips, tongue, or throat. In 2003, an estimated 3,100 new cases of oral cancer were identified in Canada, with about 1,090 resulting in death.
Importance of Early Detection
Your dental professional may screen you for oral cancer even if you do not exhibit symptoms. Early detection through screening tests can significantly decrease the risk of fatality from oral cancers. For most types of cancer, the odds of survival are greatly increased when diagnosed at an early stage.
Screening Process
At our North Vancouver office, we conduct thorough examinations to screen for oral cancer. This includes checking for lesions on the mouth, lips, hard palate, gums, tongue, and mucous membranes.
In addition to regular visual and palpatory screenings, we offer advanced technology like VELscope for early cancer detection. If lesions are detected, we may use various methods for further investigation:
- Biopsy: A small sample of suspicious tissue is excised and sent for microscopic examination.
- Exfoliative Cytology: Cells are obtained by scraping or smearing the area and then examined.
- Imaging Tests: X-rays, ultrasounds, and MRIs can be used to detect subsurface masses and lesions through radio wave energy.
- Toluidine Blue (Vital Staining): This involves applying a Toluidine blue solution to the suspicious mucosal area to highlight abnormal cellular surfaces.
Precautionary Measures
It is important to note that a referral for further oral cancer screening is usually a precautionary measure and does not necessarily mean you have cancer.
